Ingredients
Toor dal – ½ cup
Masoor dal – ¼ cup
Moong dal – ¼ cup
Tomatoes – 2, finely chopped
Onion – 1
Cumin seeds – ¼ tsp.
Garlic – 1.5 tsp.
Green chilli – 1
Red chilli – 1
Red chilli powder – ½ tsp.
Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp.
Cumin powder – ¼ tsp.
Ginger – 1” piece, julienned
Ghee – 1 tbsp.
Lemon juice – 1 tbsp.
Salt to taste
Oil – 3 tbsp.
Ghee – 1 tbsp.
For tempering
Ghee – 2 tbsp.
Cumin seeds – ¼ tsp.
Garlic – ½ tsp. chopped
Red chilli – 1
Kashmiri chilli powder – 1 tsp.
Method
- Pressure cook the dals separately. The toor dal in one and the other two dals in another.
- In a pan, heat oil and add in one red chilli together with cumin seeds and chopped garlic pieces.
- Now add in the finely chopped green chilli. Saute. Next add in the chopped onion pieces and mix well. Cook till onion turns transluscent.
- Add in a bit of salt, turmeric, red chilli powder and saute for a minute.
- Next add in the tomato pieces and cook well till tomatoes turn soft and mushy and oil separates. If you think it might burn, add in a bit of water about 1 tbsp.
- Now add in the dals and the water they were cooked in. let it come to a boil. You can add more water to adjust the consistency.
- Once it is boiling, add in cumin powder, ginger juliennes, ghee and mix well. Turn off the stove and add in the lemon juice. Stir once again.
- Do the tempering. Heat up the ghee and add in the ingredients under tempering. Saute and pour over the dal. Dal Tadka is ready to serve.
