Easy Pongal | Simple Khichdi


Rice – 1 cup
Yellow Moong dal –  ½ cup
Water – 3 cups
Black peppercorns – 1 tbsp.
Cashewnuts  – 1 tbsp.
Ghee – 3 tbsp., divided
Hing or asafetida – a pinch
Split urad dal – ½ tsp.
Cumin – 1 tsp.
Salt to taste


  1. In a pressure cooker, mix together rice, dal and water and pressure cook.
  2. Meanwhile, lightly fry the pepper corns and cashewnuts in ghee and keep aside.
  3. Once the pressure releases, mix the contents well and add the salt, peppercorns and cashewnuts.
  4. Do the tempering with ghee and remaining ingredients and add it to the rice dal mix.
  5. Mix well and serve hot.
